what du mean it’s april ? ok i haven’t updated the news page for over 2
months.. my bad. that’s the trouble with the internet.. there’s just too much
of it. too many different things to update, too many.. too many notes, as emperor
joseph II said to mozart. anyway it doesn’t make sense to write a letter to someone,
then before it gets there email them.. and then ring them checking they got
the email. so in the interests of sanity please see the scratchy twitter for news updates. thanks |

“At times reminiscent of Roxy Music, at others David Bowie and Steve
Winwood.. a varied, inventive album rammed with emotional triggers and a
genuine depth” Whisperin
& Hollerin someone gave me a copy of jonny velon's album at an indie label market
down in bristol. on first listen i wasn't sure if i'd like it.. a bit too close to ben
folds five for my taste. however, i persevered and over the next few weeks i
took the album out in the car to give it a proper listen and slowly the songs
started to reveal themselves. i’d be at work or doing something and fragments
started to appear in my head. what the f*ck is that ? oh yeah.. and then one
particularly memorable occasion when i got in the car maybe after a few days,
put on the stereo and music started playing. hmm, what is this strange,
beguiling sound coming out the speakers ? there was no singing so i thought
it must be an instrumental record.. i piled through possible names in my head
before jonny’s voice suddenly appeared on the track ‘travelling’ and
confirmed that i’d imagined this music could have come from any one of many
musical legends. talking of legends it was probably bristol-based jonny’s performance of
bowie’s ‘lazarus’ at a floor spot night up in central london that convinced
me that i had to put this album out. i sat there awestruck as he took over
the song and later that night wrote a song about the experience myself.
there’s a fuzzy youtube
clip of him playing that night if you want to see it.. my beer is the middle
one on the right. shortly after that a blistering scratchstock set at the birds nest with
jonny attacking the piano like a punk rock classical pianist raised on
rachmaninov and lou reed sealed the deal and so here we are.. you can buy the album direct from the scratchy
shop at cargo plus jonny and his band will be playing some dates around
the release:

next up is scratchstock #21 tonight, sat 24th sept at the birds nest, deptford (see flyer below) kicking off 7:30pm sharp with the one man phenomenon that is lewis floyd henry. i first encountered lewis busking by a gate in between two fields up at the big chill a few years ago and showing the big stages on either side how it’s done.. plus if you’ve ever wondered what it might‘ve been like to see jimi hendrix in action then this is probably as close as ur gonna get ! also from buskingworld are the amazing tommyandmary. i was walking home down charing cross road a few months back when the sound of faraway drums started to tickle my ears.. rounded the corner by oscar wilde and there perched perfectly on the triangular wedge of pavement outside charing cross station like it had been designed specially for them was guitarist tommy and drummer mary punkrocking the homebound ‘muters with classics like ‘my manager’s a prick’ and ‘smoke break’. nice work ! and great to see some interactive social media in actual. real. time. spinmaster plantpot returns to the spoken word slot.. i’d love to see spinmaster busking, specially his legendary re-working of ‘uptown girl’..charming south londoner e.p. garside brings some acoustrickery to proceedings (like propah buskers init) with songs about night bus bust ups, brenda vaccaro, sad gods, and psychedelic policemen - think hank williams does syd barrett plus me, ed nd hugo aka bromide will be rummaging in the noise-pop cellar using bob mould’s keys. all this and london’s most stylish dj lord anthony for free ! see ya there simon bromide x |
14/9/16 |
it’s scratchstock time again.. what’s this ? consecutive months !! #21
will be on sat 24th sept

legends tommyandmary and lewis floyd henry
as well as sarf london singer-songwriter e.p. garside, semi-resident

out today on scratchy is the new album ‘the mixtape of things’ by alvin
spetz aka that
will be lunch and known previously as 'full english breakfast'. i first heard alvin’s music in 1988 and it then took another 20 odd
years to convince him to release something. it’s still evolving today, still
fascinating and unpredictable..
“He may seem as daft as a brush but
like Brian Wilson, Todd Rundgren and Ariel Pink he is
clearly someone who knows the value of a popular melody and how to best evoke
memories of a lost era” God
is in the TV alvin doesn't play live so last weekend a few of us including film maker
phil hayes who made the excellent vid for single 'once
in lifetime' went down to kent to interview him and find out a bit more
about the man and his music. click on the pic below to watch the film we made
- the album 'the mixtape of things' is available at the scratchy online shop and itunes |
7/6/16 |
THAT WILL BE LUNCH album ‘the mixtape of things’ will be out friday 17th june and you
can pre-order now via the scratchy
shop. in the meantime vidmeister phil hayes has done a new edit of the video here
..and not to be outdone on the tinkering stakes herr spetz has done an alt.
mix of the track which you can hear er, here
- along with the new edit of the vid natch.. confused ?? maybe this
will help in gig gnus, there’s a solo electric bromide show tonight, tuesday 7th
june at the windmill
in brixton.. on about 9pm |

my favourite tribute has been the one that goes “If you're ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie” - credited to actor simon pegg but a quick google reveals that there was a bit of tweet mix up or a twix up perhaps.. which is kind of fitting given the whole thing about bowie’s shapeshifting persona and things often not being quite what they seem. anyway it seemed only fitting that the scratchstock next week (tues 26th jan) at rye wax records in peckham should be a tribute to this great musician, songwriter, performer, actor.. (space)man me and the bromides are playing plus two local bards – in the new cross corner and coming on like sleaford mods in a jazzfusion metal meltdown is poet gerry mitchell and the groovemungous debbie leggo then before them is peckham’s own psychogeographic songster george hoyle (formerly ‘nigel of bermondsey’) and his charming rustic folk quartet gentlefolk – expect songs not just about trees but whole forests and ‘let’s dance’ on a banjo. plus london’s most stylish tunelord dj lord anthony on the decks and no doubt in appropriate attire..
see you there x |
